Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rolled into Noblesville,Indiana last night to play at the Klipsch Music Center and what a night it was. It was one I certainly won’t forget for years to come. Petty first rose to prominence in the mid 70s as a part of the Heartland Music movement along with Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne among others. During a time when prog rock was trying to expand our minds and every stoner on the planet was spinning Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Petty set out to return rock and roll to its basic form. No long and lengthy epic instrumentals or lyrics too deep to comprehend. Instead the Heartbreakers set on taking rock back to its roots with simple arrangements and lyrics that talked about life in America and the complications of everyday life. It made Petty seem human and relatable, someone you could talk to and know that he’d understand what you were going through. In many ways he probably could. Down at heart, Petty is a humble man who knows much about the hardships of life. Raised in Florida, he was physically abused by his own father and the relationship was never on solid footing as Petty’s fame grew. His mother whom Petty adored, died when he was only 30 and not long after a crazed â€Å"fan† burnt his California home to the ground. In the 90s he faced a crippling divorce to his first, wife Janet Benyo and nearly sunk into a deep depression until he met his current wife, Dana York. Petty is no stranger to tragedy but throughout it all the music was his strongest force pushing him forward to make him into the legend we know and love today. Petty’s opening act for part of the tour had turned up onstage at 7:30 and did about an hour set. While the band was fine and had a good sound, most of the people were wafting around the center and not paying them any mind. Others were antsy for Petty and were just ready for them to get off the stage. Petty finally came onstage at around 9pm, a little later than scheduled but no one was worse for the wear because of it. It was probably due to the fact that the center uses large cameras to project Petty and the bands images onscreen for the people sitting far away from the stage and it was too light at 8:30 to do so efficiently. Petty walked out onstage smiling and waving to crowd, followed by the rest of the band. He looked good, better than he had in years. Still skinny as ever, he was dressed in mauve colored dress pants, a black silk shirt and a blue fitted suit jacket that was quickly stripped away and tossed to the side due to the Indiana humidity. With a nod to Mike Cam pbell on his left, they instantly went into their set. Petty who in recent interviews has stated that he was getting tired of playing the same songs over and over, has definitely switched it up on this tour to include some well known but lesser played songs. He even brought out the acoustic guitar to play â€Å"Melinda† and let Mike Campbell rip into a fiery extended solo before Benmont Tench launched into one of his own. Petty is a man of few words and just likes to get out onstage and do his job. And get the job done he did. At 62, Petty sounds the same as he always did and has boundless energy for a man his age, walking the stage back and forth and bringing the crowd to its feet. The crowd was actually the largest one to ever be assembled at Klipsch and the energy could be felt throughout the arena. I can only imagine how Petty and the band must have felt looking out into the sea of people singing their songs back to them. To have the knowledge that so many people are the re to see you and to know they love you must be a powerful feeling. I myself even got a bit weepy during â€Å"Learning to Fly,† when Petty broke away from the mike and let the crowd finish the song, with him intoning bits of it as they went along. It may have been the stench of second hand pot and stale beer making my eyes water but I think nostalgia might have been the root cause. I can remember being in high school and coming home to put on a Tom Petty record and letting his music wash over me. Petty made me proud to be an American, knowing that here was this skinny little blonde headed guy who grew up in total obscurity in Gainesville, Florida to become one of the biggest names in music history. I too grew up in a small town where not very many people make it out of and listening to his music, I thought here is a man who understands me and I think that’s why Petty is still so popular today. His music is down to earth and is on a level that most can comprehend. The arrangements are simple but the lyrics paint such a picture in your mind that it’s infectious. As the show came to a close, Petty placed his hand over his heart and thanked the crowd saying that he loved us all and as I left the arena I felt that love. Whether or not Petty knows it, his music has touched the lives of so many people including my own that he’ll live on forever. Music is a powerful thing and will never die away. Every job I have had has had people above me who were not always the most intelligent people around. There is nothing I hate more than unintelligent people telling me what to do. I have worked at a grocery store, a trailer campground, a beach and a pool, all of which I have had mentally inferior superiors. But of the jobs I have listed, the one place that is the worst to work at is a grocery store. The tasks one is asked to do as an employee of a grocery store are unimaginable. I think that being employed, especially to a grocery store, is not a good idea for teenagers because there are usually unintelligent people running them, it infringes on teenage lives, and some aspects of most jobs are disgusting. Bosses are probably the most difficult part of being employed to me. At the grocery store that I worked at for a short period of time, I remember being constantly pulled aside and being told that I wasn?t bagging the groceries properly. The strange part was that when my boss would tell me these things he would always take me to isle seven to yell and scream at me. Why couldn?t he take me into his office where it would be private? Instead he would make a big scene in front of all the old women shopping for those lovely canned foods and completely embarrass me. I never understood that. There was another reason why I knew my boss wasn?t the brightest candle on the cake. I always had to remind him that I only worked on Mondays and Wednesdays, but he could never grasp the concept. For some reason he was convinced that I worked everyday. Two days out of the five days I didn?t work I would get a call from good old Bob asking ? why aren?t you here yet I would always say ? Bob, don?t you reme mber, I only work two days a week, and this isn?t one of them.? Then he would say ? Oh yea, sorry kid, see ya? tomorrow?. So that was a frequent thing for Bob. Eulogy for Son Today, the most difficult day in my family’s life, we gather to say farewell to our son, brother, fiancà © and friend.   To those of you here and elsewhere who know Dylan you already are aware of the type of person he was and these words you will hear are already in your memory.   To those who were not as fortunate, these words will give you a sense of the type of man he was and as an ideal for which we should strive.  My son has been often described as a gentle soul.   He was pure of heart and had great sensitivity for the world around him.   He had a way with people that made them feel comfortable around him and infected others to gravitate toward him.   Dylan exuded kindness and pulled generosity and altruism out from everyone he touched.   He was everyone's best friend.   To say Dylan was polite is an understatement.   Since his early years, he showed respect and caring for all around him.   Even through the tormentous experiences of his hospital stays and chemotherapy treatment he never once failed to thank a nurse, aide, transport worker or anyone else as they gave him a meal, assisted him or performed another painful procedure.  He also was a man of compassion.   I can remember when he was six years old in Seattle.   He was running in a cross country race with his friend Tommy when the pack of runners disappeared behind bushes.   He was at that time running near the lead.   As we watched a few minutes later, all the runners reappeared and completed the race.   No Dylan nor Tommy in sight.   Finally, after a few desperate minutes Dylan and Tommy reappeared.   When asked what happened Dylan said that he and Tommy had stopped to help some frogs get out of the way of the runners.  His compassion extended to his adulthood.   He o ften spoke that while he wished to develop his career as a rowing coach and teacher of English and History he wanted to live a simple life where he could exert influence on those less fortunate that he.   Many times he said a perfect job would be where he could teach and coach crew in an inner city area and develop rowing programs with inner city kids that would rival the Eastern prep schools.  When he was told he was dying and had but a few days to live he told me he was not concerned about dying but was worried about his family and Patti.

The Taming of the Shrew As she screams at her father Katherine says What will you not suffer me? Nay now I see She is your treasure, she must have a husband; I must dance barefoot on her wedding day, And for your love to her lead apes in hell (Shakespeare 35). Katherine knows that her father favors Bianca because she is a goody two shoes of daughter. Kate expresses her feelings of having to be married off first because nobody in town wants her as a wife. Kate does not believe that she should be offered as a wife and then backed up with a dowry. She is quite opinionated about this, with no fear of who knows or not. Katherines views and beliefs of marriage and life set her apart from other women in Padua. (54) In this passage Katherine is first subjected to Petruchios plan for taming her. Angered by his actions she tells the townsfolk of her objection to this marriage. Kate believes that she should be in love with whom she wants to marry, but this is obviously not the case with Petruchio. She explains that he will make an awful husband due to his actions and his motive for even marrying her in the first place. She is embarrassed on her very own wedding day and is ashamed of Petruchio. After the wedding is over, Kate and Petruchio return to his home in the country. Petruchio begins to tell his servants all about his plan for Kate. He explains Another way I have to man my haggard, to make her come and know her keepers call: that is, to watch her, as we watch these kites that bate and beat and will not be obedient (70). Referring to Kate as a hawk that will obey its owners request, he knows that she will eventually obey his request just as the bird obeys.
