Tom Petty the Heartbreakers Klipsch Music Center 6/15/2013 by Tom Petty the Heartbreakers free essay sample

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rolled into Noblesville,Indiana last night to play at the Klipsch Music Center and what a night it was. It was one I certainly won’t forget for years to come. Petty first rose to prominence in the mid 70s as a part of the Heartland Music movement along with Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne among others. During a time when prog rock was trying to expand our minds and every stoner on the planet was spinning Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Petty set out to return rock and roll to its basic form. No long and lengthy epic instrumentals or lyrics too deep to comprehend. Instead the Heartbreakers set on taking rock back to its roots with simple arrangements and lyrics that talked about life in America and the complications of everyday life. It made Petty seem human and relatable, someone you could talk to and know that he’d understand what you were going through. In many ways he probably could. Down at heart, Petty is a humble man who knows much about the hardships of life. Raised in Florida, he was physically abused by his own father and the relationship was never on solid footing as Petty’s fame grew. His mother whom Petty adored, died when he was only 30 and not long after a crazed â€Å"fan† burnt his California home to the ground. In the 90s he faced a crippling divorce to his first, wife Janet Benyo and nearly sunk into a deep depression until he met his current wife, Dana York. Petty is no stranger to tragedy but throughout it all the music was his strongest force pushing him forward to make him into the legend we know and love today. Petty’s opening act for part of the tour had turned up onstage at 7:30 and did about an hour set. While the band was fine and had a good sound, most of the people were wafting around the center and not paying them any mind. Others were antsy for Petty and were just ready for them to get off the stage. Petty finally came onstage at around 9pm, a little later than scheduled but no one was worse for the wear because of it. It was probably due to the fact that the center uses large cameras to project Petty and the bands images onscreen for the people sitting far away from the stage and it was too light at 8:30 to do so efficiently. Petty walked out onstage smiling and waving to crowd, followed by the rest of the band. He looked good, better than he had in years. Still skinny as ever, he was dressed in mauve colored dress pants, a black silk shirt and a blue fitted suit jacket that was quickly stripped away and tossed to the side due to the Indiana humidity. With a nod to Mike Cam pbell on his left, they instantly went into their set. Petty who in recent interviews has stated that he was getting tired of playing the same songs over and over, has definitely switched it up on this tour to include some well known but lesser played songs. He even brought out the acoustic guitar to play â€Å"Melinda† and let Mike Campbell rip into a fiery extended solo before Benmont Tench launched into one of his own. Petty is a man of few words and just likes to get out onstage and do his job. And get the job done he did. At 62, Petty sounds the same as he always did and has boundless energy for a man his age, walking the stage back and forth and bringing the crowd to its feet. The crowd was actually the largest one to ever be assembled at Klipsch and the energy could be felt throughout the arena. I can only imagine how Petty and the band must have felt looking out into the sea of people singing their songs back to them. To have the knowledge that so many people are the re to see you and to know they love you must be a powerful feeling. I myself even got a bit weepy during â€Å"Learning to Fly,† when Petty broke away from the mike and let the crowd finish the song, with him intoning bits of it as they went along. It may have been the stench of second hand pot and stale beer making my eyes water but I think nostalgia might have been the root cause. I can remember being in high school and coming home to put on a Tom Petty record and letting his music wash over me. Petty made me proud to be an American, knowing that here was this skinny little blonde headed guy who grew up in total obscurity in Gainesville, Florida to become one of the biggest names in music history. I too grew up in a small town where not very many people make it out of and listening to his music, I thought here is a man who understands me and I think that’s why Petty is still so popular today. His music is down to earth and is on a level that most can comprehend. The arrangements are simple but the lyrics paint such a picture in your mind that it’s infectious. As the show came to a close, Petty placed his hand over his heart and thanked the crowd saying that he loved us all and as I left the arena I felt that love. Whether or not Petty knows it, his music has touched the lives of so many people including my own that he’ll live on forever. Music is a powerful thing and will never die away. So god bless you Tom Petty and thanks for the memories! In relation to your current business environment (or one that you are familiar with), identify at least two different types of information technology that may be used when completing work tasks. We will write a custom essay sample on Principles of Managing Information and Producing Documents or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Information technology is a broad term which encompasses computer hardware, networking, computer security applications, internet and web technologies, and application software development. Some forms of information technology that I use when completing work tasks are: †¢ Spreadsheets †¢ Word processing †¢ Databases †¢ Mobile technology †¢ Presentation software 2. What are the benefits to businesses (and others) of using information technology for doing work tasks? Information technology benefits a business by allowing it to work more efficiently and effectively to maximise productivity. Benefits are: Faster communication for example email communication †¢ Electronic storage †¢ Enhanced protection of information †¢ Information sharing is made easier through electronic storage and communication †¢ Geographical barriers are removed †¢ Cost savings †¢ Streamlined business processes †¢ Time Savings †¢ Cultural gaps are reduc ed, as Information Technology has led to a worldwide language Section 2 – Understand how to manage electronic and paper-based information 1. Explain the purpose of agreeing objectives and deadlines when researching information. If possible, refer to specific examples from research tasks you have worked on to support your answer. It is important to agree objectives when doing research to ensure that the required information is researched. By having these objectives agreed, is allows the researcher to focus on getting the desire result and thus not wasting resources and time. Objectives which should be agreed are: †¢ Deadline †¢ What information is required †¢ Who will be reviewing the information †¢ How is the information to be displayed A personal example of this is the data requirements for a campaign that has been requested. The full details of what is required of me, and the outcomes are detailed within the mailing design – Appendix 1. This document will have been produced with my feedback as well as stakeholders, to ensure that we are all looking at the same outcome. What I produce at the end of this, through the databases for which I conduct this research is a full list of who should be communicated too in the desired layout. 2. Identify the different ways of researching, organising and reporting information. †¢ Outline Method This is a very tidy, structured and useful method for researching, organising and reporting information. It is however, difficult to maintain if you are not using it in an electronic format. When using it in its electronic format is it easy to move and edit text as you work. †¢ Note cards This is manual way of recording the information that your have researched. They can be easily shifted and reorganised to create a final order for the information you have researched. Cards can be various colours to identify importance. There are however some drawbacks for using this method: a) Difficult to transport b) Can easily get out of order, unless appropriately stored c) Difficult to relay information to an audience †¢ Highlighting and Book marking This method is most practical when researching with books. If the books are not your own, it does mean that some photocopying is required. Highlighting could be done with different colours to represent importance and relevance. Book marking is to show where highlighting has taken place, this enable you to not have to page through the books again, when you are creating your report. †¢ Writing as you read Most people find this the easiest method when trying to create a report when researching information. The reason that this is found to be the easiest is that the word processing software enable the user to easily edit and move text as you work. Whilst this method eliminates the step of collecting your research and then transposing it to the computer, it doesn’t work for everyone. Not one method is the correct method, and they can be comibined. I myself combine all of the above methods, when researching, organising and reporting information. 3a) For your own organisation (or one you know well), describe the procedures that need to be followed when archiving, retrieving and deleting information. Your answer should cover procedures for both electronic and paper-based information. Information storage, retrieval and destruction procedures for my company are detailed within the Records Management Policy (Appendix 2). For us records are defined as either relevant or Non-relevant. Non-relevant records, either electronic ore paper, have no legal requirement to be kept and are therefore required to be disposed of as soon as is practical. Archiving – dependant on the Record type, will define for how long the record should be archived before it can be destroyed. The retention period is determined by referring to the retention schedule (Appendix 3) †¢ Archiving (Electronic based) Within our organisation there is no process required for us to archive our emails, as this is automatically done and managed through our email programme. For other electronic documents there is a specific process to be followed: All records need to be logged on the appropriate Business Log with all relevant information and the folder appropriately names with the destruction date at the end. The files themselves are not actually archived but continue to be held on the electronic drive until the destruction date. †¢ Archiving (Paper based) 1. Use the standard filing boxes 2. Do not store non-relevant records . Complete the box label (include the destruction date as defined by the Retention schedule) 4. Remove the Bank’s copy of the bar code 5. Stick the bank’s copy of the bar code to the Master Record Form 6. Use the bar code Master Record Form to record what is in the box and its destruction date. 7. Contact the Barclays National Records transport department to orga nise to collection of your archive boxes. 8. Send a copy of the Master Record Form to the Barclays National Records Department, remembering to keep a copy for your own records (in case of a retrieval request being received) Retrieving (electronic based) When a retrieval request is received, the leadership team has 24 hours to identify the records to be retrieved. The formal retrieval of the records should take place within 5 working days of the request being received. To retrieve the record: 1. Refer to the Business list of Records to determine which folder the information is stored in. 2. Go to the folder and retrieve the record. 3. Send to the requester, as defined within the request. †¢ Retrieving (Paper based) When a retrieval request is received, the leadership team has 24 hours to identify the records to be retrieved.

Jobs Are Not For Everyone Essays - Nelle A. Coley, Pedagogy

Jobs Are Not For Everyone Essays - Nelle A. Coley, Pedagogy Jobs Are Not For Everyone In the eighteen years I have been on this planet there are a few important things I have learned. One of the most important things I have learned is that jobs are not for me, at least not at this point in my life. Many different employers have employed me and I have had a taste of what the job world is all about, but I don?t want any part of it. Every job I have had has had people above me who were not always the most intelligent people around. There is nothing I hate more than unintelligent people telling me what to do. I have worked at a grocery store, a trailer campground, a beach and a pool, all of which I have had mentally inferior superiors. But of the jobs I have listed, the one place that is the worst to work at is a grocery store. The tasks one is asked to do as an employee of a grocery store are unimaginable. I think that being employed, especially to a grocery store, is not a good idea for teenagers because there are usually unintelligent people running them, it infringes on teenage lives, and some aspects of most jobs are disgusting. Bosses are probably the most difficult part of being employed to me. At the grocery store that I worked at for a short period of time, I remember being constantly pulled aside and being told that I wasn?t bagging the groceries properly. The strange part was that when my boss would tell me these things he would always take me to isle seven to yell and scream at me. Why couldn?t he take me into his office where it would be private? Instead he would make a big scene in front of all the old women shopping for those lovely canned foods and completely embarrass me. I never understood that. There was another reason why I knew my boss wasn?t the brightest candle on the cake. I always had to remind him that I only worked on Mondays and Wednesdays, but he could never grasp the concept. For some reason he was convinced that I worked everyday. Two days out of the five days I didn?t work I would get a call from good old Bob asking ? why aren?t you here yet I would always say ? Bob, don?t you reme mber, I only work two days a week, and this isn?t one of them.? Then he would say ? Oh yea, sorry kid, see ya? tomorrow?. So that was a frequent thing for Bob. Over all I would say that most bosses are strange people to deal with, and hard people to work for, and there is enough confusion in a teenager?s life without someone like Bob to add a little more. Being in high school is a busy time of one?s life, and having a job makes it even busier. For myself, I think that having a boss that wasn?t that bright made things even harder. One time I can recall where my job really interfered with my life was when I had tickets to go see a concert. Unfortunately I had to work that day. I did not see any big problem with this; I would just take the day off. Not with Bob around. To someone like him, groceries are life and they should be for everyone, especially me. Well little did he know that this little situation would end my employment with that wonderful shopping facility. I told him I wanted to see this show and he pulled out the big gun; he said ? Son, I don?t want to be a jerk but if you?re going to miss work for some concert, I?ll have to ask you to leave, for good.? I told him I understood and needless to say I left. Come on, how many times does your favorite band come to town? I think it was well worth it. I am only a teenager once and I will work the rest of my life. Jobs and teens do not mix. The worst part of employment is the nasty little tasks one must perform while on duty. Every job

The Healthcare Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 2

The Healthcare - Essay Example In an interview with Clay G., Med, Ph.D. classroom teacher at Michelle Jordan, and counselor at Seagoville Elementary School, Dr. Clay mentioned that the most substance used by children in my school is tobacco. He confirmed that Seagoville is in a low socio-economic area in Dallas County and has a prevalence of drug users which these children are exposed to, the kids tend to pick up smoking or using drugs because of the area they live and grew up inside. Due to the low education and increasing poverty in this area, students rarely escape such poverty. Dr. Clay explained that students who use drugs display different behaviors. In addition to mood swings, students are usually jittery, lethargic, depressed, and unable to focus. When these behaviors are noticed by the teacher the parents are invited to meet with a counselor and the child’s teacher. The school counselor in most cases provides weekly lessons to students on any issues related to drug and peer pressure. Schools togeth er with district administrators mostly hold the Red Ribbon Drug Free week, which is a pledge for students not to use drugs. He recommended that the only thing that may help in reducing such drug abuse is early education and funding to increase resources that will help reach all children at a tender age. More commercials have to be designed to show students the effects of drug abuse such as, â€Å"this is your brain on drugs† campaign shown a few years ago, with the person’s brain presented in form of an egg being fried on a pan.

Shakespeares Othello Essay Example for Free

Shakespeares Othello Essay Shakespeares Othello, as a tragedy, offers a plot and theme which are so closely connected that one can only be interpreted in regard to the other. For example, Othellos pride is explored through the use of irony while, during the course of the play, Iago manipulates Othello (along with the other characters) into progressively more damaging and violent acts of self-destruction. Iago realizes, as the audience realizes, that Othellos prideful nature along with his professional and temperamental propensity for violence will probably end in blood-shed. This realization which the audience enjoys is not known to Othello himself and that is where Shakespeares use of irony is both brilliantly executed and highly expressive of the plays deepest theme: that of self-knowledge. Although it may be somewhat of an oversimplification to suggest that the entirety of Othello is based around the idea of self-knowledge, such a suggestion is, in fact, born out by the play itself due to the aforementioned tight link between the plays plot and theme, which can be taken together as the expression of Othellos character development. In other words, Othellos internal state is mirrored thorough the action of the play and both the plot nd dialogue give the alert audience member or reader many clues as to exactly how Othellos character development has contributed to the outward manifestation of action in the play. For example, Othello’s famous monologue in Act 5, Scene 2, where he addresses Gratiano, after murdering Desdemona demonstrates his (and by extension, a universally human) self-reflective capacity. The passage is both introspective and ironic. The impact of Othello’s predominantly militaristic orientation to the world; hence, a primarily masculine perception of the world, has collided tragically with the more delicate, ambiguous and feminine domestic sphere of love and sexual monogamy. For Othello, force is the most applicable tool for confronting crisis, or had always been; but through the rising tension of his monologue in Act 5, Scene 2, the once-great general realizes his current enemy is himself: and that enemy must be dispatched by force. So, the monologue is, in effect, a self-eulogy. By looking deeply into the construction of this pivotal scene, including the prosody, imagery, and diction of the lines, a sort of microcosm of the plays them can be extracted. Othellos monologue opens: Behold, I have a weapon; (256). in a smooth iambic pentameter and later â€Å"broken† by anapests, spondees, and dactyls, is a powerful blank verse, with admirable modulation in both meter and imagery. Behold, I have a weapon; A better never did itself sustain Upon a soldiers thigh (256-58) A basic iambic meter is established with a markedly powerful use of alliteration: the â€Å"s† sound of â€Å"itself sustain/ Upon a soldier’s thigh† creates a sense of onomatopoeia with the sword be drawn from its scabbard. Or slicing to the â€Å"heart. † The next phrase â€Å"I have seen the day (V, ii, 258) begins Othello’s descent into self-realization, lines 258-260 follows through with several technical elements, notably a rhyme between â€Å"day† (258) and â€Å"way† (260) which implies a particular fatalism and also the continuation of the anthropomorphization of the sword, begun in the use of the word â€Å"sustain† (257). This is an extension of irony, suggesting that Othello’s former glory as a soldier has passed to his sword alone, or that his noble characteristics have devolved there. I have made my way through more impediments Than twenty times your stop: but, O vain boast! (260-261). These lines are anchored powerfully by the â€Å"O vain boast! † spondee, a tremendous precursor to the dominant â€Å"O† vowel-assonance that carries the breadth of the thematic and aesthetic weight of the monologue in its latter half. The sense of fatalism is extended in the following lines: â€Å"Who can control his fate? / ‘Tis not so now. Be not afraid, though you do see me weapon’d;/ Here is my journey’s end, here is my butt,/ And the very sea-mark of my utmost sail† (262-265). Interestingly, the rhyme on â€Å"here is my butt† and â€Å"of my utmost† lend a sense of grim finality, although the monologue here reaches its midpoint. The extension â€Å"beyond doom† now creates dynamism in the use of extensive alliteration, built on the â€Å"O† vowel. â€Å"Where should Othello go? / Now, how dost thou look now? O ill-starred wench! / Pale as thy smock! When we shall meet at compt,† (268-270). The continuation of this motif is hypnotic and rings as though the speaker and audience are being simultaneously initiated into the deepest, most dire expression of human despair, essentially that of self-confrontation, or self-realization. One might readily observe the letter â€Å"O† itself as not only a sight-rhyme, but an almost concrete expression of this self-confrontation ro realization, as a symbol of wholeness, unity and perfection. This unity is applied in ironically – in tragic consequence – reflecting not only Desdemona’s essential purity, but now longed for wholeness of Othello’s former self: â€Å"Cold, cold, my girl! / Even like thy chastity. O cursed slave! † (272-273). The invocation to â€Å"ye devils† to â€Å"blow me about in winds! / roast me in sulphur! / Wash me in steep-down gulfs of liquid fire! † (275-277) crescendos into the despairing refrain of â€Å"O Desdemona! Desdemona! dead! / O! O! O! † (278-279). Othello’s monologue, based thematically on the two central tensions of irony and self-realization, is carried forward technically by an iambic meter which is out through torturous variations featuring the use of pyrotechnical spondees, dactyls, as well as the use of the refrain, the use of onomatopoeia, internal rhyme, sight rhyme, and controlled imagery. This is basically an illustration in poetic form of the inner-chaos which has taken over Othellos mind and for all intents and purposes his body. The utter irony and self-destruction which has been building throughout the play is at last released through Othellos murder of the innocent Desdemona. The mood of the monologue is despairing, building from a level iambic rhythm to the broken spondees of the closing lines. The jarring, indelible alliteration of â€Å"O Desdemona! Desdemona! dead! † demonstrates the essentially nihilistic or tragic essence of Othello’s monologue. The central irony of the passage is that Othello discovers his tenderness in his despair of Desdemona’s death, but he realizes this too late. This ironic realization, along with the rising crescendo of the poem’s meter and diction creates a powerful aesthetic tension, framing a bridge to Othello’s death later in the play. The idea that Othello could have recognized what was actually going on earlier in the play and in doing so prevented both his own and Desdemonas death is an interesting idea, but it is specious because the whole point of the play Othello is to demonstrate that character is destiny. In other words, Othello was destined to self-destruction so long as he retained the magnificent fault of pride, coupled with violence, which was, in fact, the center of his personality. Asking whether or not the tragedy could have been prevented involves not merely the capacity for Othello to enact self-realization earlier in the play, but for his entire personhood to be reconfigured in order that he not possess the destructive pride and violence which brought about the tragedy depicted in the play.

Eulogy for Son :: Eulogies Eulogy

Eulogy for Son Today, the most difficult day in my family’s life, we gather to say farewell to our son, brother, fiancà © and friend.   To those of you here and elsewhere who know Dylan you already are aware of the type of person he was and these words you will hear are already in your memory.   To those who were not as fortunate, these words will give you a sense of the type of man he was and as an ideal for which we should strive.  My son has been often described as a gentle soul.   He was pure of heart and had great sensitivity for the world around him.   He had a way with people that made them feel comfortable around him and infected others to gravitate toward him.   Dylan exuded kindness and pulled generosity and altruism out from everyone he touched.   He was everyone's best friend.   To say Dylan was polite is an understatement.   Since his early years, he showed respect and caring for all around him.   Even through the tormentous experiences of his hospital stays and chemotherapy treatment he never once failed to thank a nurse, aide, transport worker or anyone else as they gave him a meal, assisted him or performed another painful procedure.  He also was a man of compassion.   I can remember when he was six years old in Seattle.   He was running in a cross country race with his friend Tommy when the pack of runners disappeared behind bushes.   He was at that time running near the lead.   As we watched a few minutes later, all the runners reappeared and completed the race.   No Dylan nor Tommy in sight.   Finally, after a few desperate minutes Dylan and Tommy reappeared.   When asked what happened Dylan said that he and Tommy had stopped to help some frogs get out of the way of the runners.  His compassion extended to his adulthood.   He o ften spoke that while he wished to develop his career as a rowing coach and teacher of English and History he wanted to live a simple life where he could exert influence on those less fortunate that he.   Many times he said a perfect job would be where he could teach and coach crew in an inner city area and develop rowing programs with inner city kids that would rival the Eastern prep schools.  When he was told he was dying and had but a few days to live he told me he was not concerned about dying but was worried about his family and Patti.
